Multi-Site Hospitality & Retail Operator (Southcentral AK)

A multi-site Alaska hospitality and retail operator was losing thousands of dollars in credit card sales and booking calls whenever regional road construction or weather knocked out their primary terrestrial internet connection.

The Challenge

Each location relied on a single ISP modem feeding an unmanaged switch. When an ISP outage hit during peak summer visitor hours, credit card terminals went offline, VoIP phones went dead, and staff had no visibility into when service would return.

Our Approach

We installed commercial Dual-WAN gateways at each site, keeping their primary terrestrial fiber/cable circuit on WAN 1 and integrating roof-mounted Starlink Business terminals in bypass mode on WAN 2. We segmented POS, VoIP, Staff, and Guest Wi-Fi onto separate VLANs and configured automatic failover rules that throttle guest video streaming whenever running on backup satellite bandwidth.

Project Results

  • Automatic sub-5-second failover kept POS terminals and phones online through two regional ISP outages
  • Guest Wi-Fi automatically rate-limited during failover so business-critical transactions never lag
  • Site-to-site encrypted VPN stayed connected continuously between headquarters and branch locations
  • Real-time SMS and email alerts notify management whenever a primary ISP circuit drops or recovers
