Switching IT Providers (MSP Takeover) Without Downtime Checklist
How to transition away from an unresponsive or out-of-state IT provider cleanly while protecting your admin credentials.

Field-Tested Alaska IT Checklist
Changing IT providers doesn't require confrontation or downtime. Use this structured takeover checklist to ensure your business retains 100% ownership of its domains, cloud tenants, firewalls, and backups.
1. Pre-Notice Ownership & Credential Audit
Verify Global Admin ownership in Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace
Confirm a company executive holds a break-glass Global Admin account independent of the outgoing MSP.
Confirm Domain Registrar & DNS control
Verify your company owns the GoDaddy, Cloudflare, or Namecheap account where your domain is registered.
Inventory ISP account numbers & static IPs
Collect your GCI, ACS, MTA, or Starlink account PINs and static IP subnet documentation.
2. Cutover Day: Security & Agent Replacement
Rotate firewall, switch, and Wi-Fi admin passwords
Update management credentials on UniFi, SonicWall, Fortinet, or Meraki appliances.
Revoke outgoing MSP delegated admin (GDAP/DAP) links
Remove partner tenant relationships and third-party API tokens in Microsoft Entra ID.
Deploy new RMM & EDR agents silently
Push Kismet AK monitoring and security agents in the background without rebooting employee computers.
3. Post-Cutover Backup & Compliance Verification
Establish independent 3-2-1 backup vaults
Ensure local NAS snapshots and immutable cloud backups are under your company's ownership.
Perform a test file restore
Verify recovery speed and deliver a complete baseline network & security documentation binder.
